UFC fighter Steve Montgomery daydreamed of fighting before the end of the year in one of the upcoming international fights.
After his debut loss in Hollywood, Fl., he wanted to overcome and get back on the winning column. Thankfully for him, Ricardo Abreu who was scheduled to fight the Australian Daneil Kelly dropped out due to an injury.
On November 14, Montgomery, from Boca Raton, will meet Kelly part of what is expected to be the biggest attended fight in UFC history headlined by bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey vs Holly Holm. The fight will air on pay-per-view.
Montgomery spoke to The Roman Show prior to his fight.
“In the summer time I heard (welterweight champion) Robbie Lawler was going to be on that card,” he said. “I daydreamed I was going to be on that card. I don’t know. I just thought about fighting in Australia. Once I heard he was pulled out of the card I still wanted to fight sometime in September or October. I noticed all of the international fight cards approaching. I said how great would it be to get in a fight before December to avenge my loss. I was mentally prepared for it. I spoke to my manager asking for a fight.”
He also gave his two cents on weight cutting in mma.
“Weight cutting in general isn’t a good idea at all,” he told The Roman Show. “You gonna get out there to a fist fight the next day. You shouldn’t be cutting weight. In my opinion I would say no more weigh ins just weigh the guy in right before he fights inside the cage about 30 seconds before. Have weight classes every 10 pounds.”
