Miami’s MMA Masters standout featherweight fighter Danny “The Colombian Warrior” Chavez (9-2) has found a new motivation pushing him to continue to fight, his students.
Chavez will battle the southpaw Dylan Cala (6-2) for the Global Legion FC strap at the Magic City Innovation District, 6301 NE 4 Avenue, Miami, FL, Saturday, March 14, 2020.
He joined The Roman Show days before his fight.
“Last year I paused my mixed marital arts career a little bit not because I wanted to, but I was looking for big opportunities. It didn’t happen,” he said. “I stayed busy with grappling. I got in the cage to do super fights with high grapplers. I am back in action. I don’t like to be rusty in the cage even though I don’t believe in ring rust.”
This will be his third stab at a title shot. Prior to Saturday’s competition, he competed against the late Jordan Parsons for the CFA featherweight belt and he took on Jason Soares for the Fight Time Promotions belt. He came short on both bouts.
Cala hasn’t fought since a loss against Andrew Whitney back in 2018. The Colombian last competed in late 2018 where he defeated Pipe Vargas.
Today, he is counting on a new motivation to walk out with strap this weekend.
“They (students) are the reason why I still fight, and I continue to push,” he said. “I am a competitive guy but, in this sport, you need an inspiration and push and motivation, and they give me that. I need to set an example. I want to show them how to go at a high level.”
His students will be with him in the locker prior to walking out.
For this fight, he trained with true southpaws to get himself prepared mentally and physically. Hear the complete interview, available for streaming.
